What’s in a Name?
Our name is centered around the history of the Waco Suspension Bridge, as it was one of the only areas where people and cattle could cross the Brazos River when completed in 1870. Prior to the bridge, people had to cross mostly by ferry. Little known fact, the company, John Roebling Co., which created the twisted steel cables, used the Waco Suspension Bridge as the testing ground for this break through in steel technology and later used the same technology on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.
Our Tartan: MacLennan (McLennan) Modern
In honor of frontiersman Neil McLennan, who was born in 1777 on the Isle of Skye, Scotland and immigrated to North Carolina in 1801. He would travel to Texas by way of Florida on a ship called the Caledonia. McLennan traveled with George Erath (Erath Co. was named after him) on a surveying trip in 1839 ending near present day Waco along the Bosque River, where he would later live until his death. He is Buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco. McLennan County is named after him.
