When a few pipers and drummers from the Volunteer pipe band, later known as the Territorial Army Band, came together in 1913, Thurso Pipe Band was born. Alex Mackay of the St Clair Hotel in Thurso helped establish the band and became its first Pipe Major.
In its early days, the band relied on public contributions to purchase ex-Army kilts and jackets for its members.
The original kilts were Mackenzie tartan, which the band has retained throughout its history. Its early khaki tunics were dyed black to create a smart and distinctive uniform.
The early years proved to be very successful but when war broke out in 1914 a number of the members were called up for active service. However, those that remained kept the band alive throughout the war years.
The band now performs as Thurso and District Pipe Band at community events, galas, Highland Games, and summer appearances in Thurso. Follow Thurso and District Pipe Band on Facebook for current performances, recruitment, and contact information.
