The Washington Tattoo is a veteran-led nonprofit supporting veterans and at-risk youth through music wellness. Its events draw on the military tattoo tradition, bringing together music and performing arts.
What is a tattoo?
A tattoo is a performing-arts event combining music, marching, dance and other displays by military and civilian performers.
The name comes from the Dutch phrase “doe den tap toe”, meaning “turn off the tap.” In the seventeenth century, military drummers signalled that soldiers should finish their drinks and return to quarters. Over time, the signal developed into the musical spectacle known as a military tattoo.
