Updated

Arnhem, Gelderland, Netherlands

Airborne Memorial Arnhem takes place at Airborneplein, Arnhem, at the foot of the John Frost Bridge, on September 17, 2027, at 7pm.

The international ceremony remembers Allied soldiers killed while trying to capture and hold the bridge during September 17–23, 1944. British and Polish veterans, military representatives and civilian officials lay wreaths in remembrance.

Ceremony and pipes and drums

The traditional programme includes a memorial service in Eusebius Church, followed by a silent march to Airborne Square. Before the ceremony, the March over the Bridge brings the massed Pipes and Drums RBL The Netherlands and standard bearers across John Frost Bridge in a slow march into Arnhem. The Arnhem Scouting Band traditionally accompanies the commemoration.

Wreath laying is followed by the Bridge to Liberation Experience, a multimedia event beside the Rhine. Check the official page for current programme details.

The Airborne monument incorporates a war-damaged column from the former Palace of Justice, inscribed “17 SEPTEMBER 1944”.
