A living carnival tradition

Rijeka’s masking customs span centuries. The modern revival began in 1982, when the Halubje Bell Ringers, Pehlin’s Party People and the “No Problem” group paraded along Korzo at the invitation of the tourist board.

Today, local carnival groups help sustain the celebration through elaborate costumes, floats and performances. Cultural, entertainment and sporting events make the season a distinctive expression of the city’s identity.
