Evacuation of Dunkirk (which began on May 27) was completed., 338,226 soldiers were brought back to the UK by the little ships.

On June 4, 1940, Winston Churchill delivered one of his most famous speeches to the British House of Commons — later broadcast to the nation — in the wake of the Dunkirk evacuation. Declaring Britain’s resolve against Nazi Germany, he stated:
“We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be.
We shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
we shall fight in the hills;
we shall never surrender.”
The speech became a defining moment of British wartime determination.
