The Revenue Commissioners report the robbery of the Danish ship Golden Lyon’s cargo at Ballyheige. The ship, owned by the Danish Asiatic Company, had run aground or been stranded. The valuable cargo was stolen by local raiders.
- One of the robbers was apprehended and turned King’s evidence (became a state witness).
- The Danish Asiatic Company offered a 10% reward based on the cargo’s value for any successful recovery.
This incident drew international attention and diplomatic concern due to the ship’s foreign registry and valuable commercial goods.
