On this date, the world’s first floral clock began operation in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh. Designed by city park superintendent John McHattie and clockmaker James Ritchie, the floral marvel was originally powered by traditional clockwork and featured just a single hour hand.
This horticultural innovation not only became an iconic city feature but also inspired floral clocks in cities around the world. Its hands were later motorized and a minute hand added, but it remains a lasting symbol of Victorian ingenuity and civic pride.
