Godert de Ginkel, 1st Earl of Athlone offers pardon

During the Williamite War in Ireland, the strategic town of Athlone fell to forces loyal to William of Orange, despite fierce resistance from the Irish Jacobite defenders.
One of the most heroic moments came when Sergeant Custume and a small band of volunteers attempted to destroy a bridge across the Shannon under heavy fire to halt the advancing enemy. Most were killed, but their bravery became legendary in Irish military history.
Though the defenders fought valiantly, the Connacht side of Athlone was overwhelmed. The remaining Irish troops retreated westward toward Limerick, setting the stage for the final sieges of the war.
