Richard Levinge, an Irish Member of Parliament and prominent lawyer, was committed to the Tower of London by the English House of Commons during the late 17th century—likely in connection with political tensions involving the constitutional relationship between England and Ireland.
He was later released, allowing him to resume a successful career. Levinge went on to serve as Solicitor-General for Ireland, Attorney-General, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons, and eventually became Chief Justice of the Common Pleas in Ireland. His career reflected the complexities of Anglo-Irish legal and political life during the post-Restoration and early 18th-century period.
