On August 25, 1942, Prince George, Duke of Kent, the younger brother of King George VI, was tragically killed in a military air crash. He was aboard a Short Sunderland flying boat of the Royal Air Force when it crashed into Eagles Rock near Dunbeath in Caithness, Scotland.

The aircraft was reportedly en route to Iceland, although the exact purpose of the mission remains partly speculative. All but one of the crew members were killed in the crash.

This incident was notable for several reasons:

-	Prince George was the first member of the British royal family to die on active military service in over 500 years.
-	At the time of his death, he was serving as an Air Commodore in the Royal Air Force.
-	His death was surrounded by some mystery and speculation, as details of the flight’s mission and the cause of the crash were not fully disclosed.

Prince George left behind his wife, Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, and three children, including Prince Edward, Duke of Kent. His death was a significant loss for the royal family during the difficult years of World War II.
