King George IV Died, Aged, 67 (And William IV Ascended the Throne)

June 26, 1830 – Death of King George IV at Age 67; William IV Ascends the Throne
On this day in 1830, King George IV died at the age of 67. He was succeeded by his younger brother, William IV.
George IV, who had ruled as Prince Regent during his father George III’s mental illness and then as king from 1820, is often remembered for his extravagant lifestyle and personal excesses. He is widely regarded as Britain’s heaviest monarch, both physically and in terms of spending.
Known for his lavish tastes in architecture, fashion, and food, George IV famously indulged in elaborate breakfasts which reportedly included two roast pigeons, three beefsteaks, a bottle of white wine, a glass of champagne, two glasses of port, and a brandy—all in a single sitting.
Despite his flamboyant personality, his reign saw significant developments such as the Catholic Emancipation Act (1829), which granted civil rights to Roman Catholics in Britain and Ireland.
His successor, William IV, would become known as the “Sailor King” and would oversee key political reforms, including the Reform Act of 1832, which restructured Britain’s electoral system.
