The Strathnaver Clearances began on the Sutherland estates
The Strathnaver Clearances, part of the broader Highland Clearances, began on the Sutherland estates in northern Scotland. These evictions were part of a controversial effort by landlords to replace tenant farming with more profitable sheep farming. - Families were given only 30 minutes to gather their belongings. - Their homes were then set on fire, leaving many destitute. - Carried out by agents of the estate, the clearances caused widespread suffering and led to mass emigration.
