The first Open Golf Championship is held at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. With just eight competitors, the tournament marks the beginning of what would become the oldest and one of the most prestigious championships in golf.
The winner is Willie Park Sr. of Musselburgh, who finishes ahead of Old Tom Morris, claiming the inaugural title and a red leather belt with silver clasps as the prize.
This historic event in 1860 lays the foundation for The Open Championship, a tournament that will grow to define excellence in the sport for generations.
