David Dunbar Buick is born at 26 Green Street, Arbroath, Scotland, on September 17, 1854. He emigrates to the United States with his parents at the age of two, settling in Detroit, Michigan.
An inventor and entrepreneur, Buick originally made his mark with innovations in plumbing technology before turning to the automobile industry. He founded the Buick Manufacturing Company, which produced one of the first internal combustion engine cars in America. Though a pioneer in automotive engineering, Buick lacked the business acumen to grow the company.
It was William C. Durant who later transformed Buick into the foundation of General Motors, a global automotive giant. Despite his early role, Buick died in modest circumstances, largely detached from the fortune his innovations helped create.
