Cornwallis moves forward from Tuam to attack Castlebar

Lord Cornwallis advances from Tuam to launch an attack on Castlebar, shortly after the dramatic victory there by General Humbert and his combined force of French troops and Irish rebels during the 1798 Rebellion. Anticipating the British move, Humbert evacuates Castlebar with approximately 800 French soldiers and 1,000 Irish insurgents, marching northward into County Sligo.

His objective is bold: to advance into Ulster and ignite further rebellion. Humbert’s force marches through the night, continuing the momentum of the short-lived “Republic of Connacht”. Meanwhile, fresh risings break out in Longford and Westmeath, further straining British control and showing the growing reach of the insurrection, though these efforts will ultimately be suppressed.
