Forrest Reid is born in Belfast on June 24, 1875. A novelist, literary critic, and autobiographer, he is best known for his sensitive portrayals of boyhood and adolescence, particularly in works like Young Tom and Tom Barber, which won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Reid was also a distinguished book and print collector, with a special interest in Victorian illustrators. His scholarly work culminated in the influential study Illustrators of the Sixties, a definitive text on the book illustration of the 1860s. Today, he is recognized as a major figure in early 20th-century Irish literature.
