Strathroy Legion Pipe Band
Originally formed in 1963, the Strathroy Legion Pipe Band is a Grade 3 competition unit sponsored by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 116 in Strathroy, Ontario Canada.
The Strathroy Legion Pipe Band, originally formed in 1963, is under the direction of Pipe Major Kevin Mitchell. P/M Mitchell's skills as a player and leader have been honed over the past 30 years with SLPB. The P/M also studied as a piping student in Scotland. The Strathroy Legion Pipe Band is a Grade 3 competition unit and has successfully participated in pipe band competitions in Canada, United States, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. Some of the Band's accomplishments include 3rd Place at the World Pipe Band Championships, 1st Place at the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Diamond Jubilee Championship, and 1st Place at the Canadian Pipe Band Championship. The Band most recently traveled to Scotland in August 2002 to compete at the World Pipe Band Championships. The Band wears the Ancient MacDonald of Glengarry tartan. P/M Kevin Mitchell is from Strathroy, Ontario. Pipe Sergeant Gordon Wallace is from London, Ontario. Pipe Sergeant Wayne Cartier is from Norwich, Ontario. Lead Drummer Jim Perry is from County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Drum Major Brad Owen is from Marysville, Michigan USA. For 30 years, the Strathroy Legion Pipe Band was led by Pipe Major Jim Frame. Jim, who was born and raised in Scotland, recently took a well-deserved retirement. But it is fair to say that without him the Band would not be where it is today. Jim Frame was formerly a member of the Royal Highland Fusiliers and once served as the Lone Piper at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It was his stalwart leadership that saw the band through three decades of development and his imprint on the Band will be felt for many years to come.
