The original City of Denver Pipe Band was formed circa 1967. About 1968 or 1969 the Black Watch of Colorado was formed.
In 1973 the name of the Black Watch of Colorado was changed to The Sutherland Highlanders of Colorado. Since both bands, the City of Denver Pipe Band and the Sutherland Highlanders of Colorado, were experiencing an obvious hiatus of personnel, it was agreed, by the boards of directors of both bands, that the best thing to do was to merge. The name of the City of Denver Pipe Band was kept for the amalgamated band and it is rumored that the Sutherland Highlanders had more uniforms than the City of Denver Pipe Band so the uniform of the Sutherland Highlanders of Colorado was adopted as the uniform of the new City of Denver Pipe Band. The City of Denver Pipe Band has competed and performed from Tennessee and Georgia to California. In August, 2000 the band traveled to Scotland to compete in the World's pipe band championships. While in Scotland, the band marched in the Millenium March, the largest gathering of pipes and drums in the world, performed in Edinburgh, Stirling Castle, Aberfoyle and Dunblane and competed in Edinburgh, Perth and Glasgow. The City of Denver Pipe Band was the first band, from Colorado, to compete in the World's Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. In addition to pipes and drums the band has, as an integral part of the band, a Highland dance section and an Irish step dance section. The band meets, for rehearsal, Monday evenings from 7:00P.M. to 10:00P.M. at the All Saints Episcopal Church located at 3650 Yates (3two blocks east of Sheridan and one block south of 38th Avenue). If you are an aspiring (3or proficient) piper or drummer, stop in and look us over. Occassionally, as the situation warrents, there are classes for Highland and Irish dancers. This, however, is normally handled through private instruction until you are proficient enough to perform with the band. If you are interested, please give us a call.
