Band members wear the Muted Red Grant Tartan with Lovatt Green Tweed Jackets.
The present band was formed in 1982 when Darrell Hellier, a Landcorp farm manager at Rangitaiki brought together a number of like-minded individuals who were resident in the Taupo area. This group superseded an earlier pipe band that had existed in the late 1950's / early 1960's when geothermal and hydro generation stations were under construction. That band disbanded when many of its members shifted south to pursue employments in other hydro generation schemes. Band members initially practiced in garages, church halls, and school classrooms prior to acquiring the band room in 1992. An influx of new members in 1987 saw membership build to a new level that enabled the band to compete in national pipe band contests. The first National Championships the band attended in Rotorua in March 1988 saw them comfortably win Grade Four. Promoted to Grade Three the band completed successfully in that grade before financial pressures and a reduction in membership saw the band miss several National Championships. Relegated to Grade Four in 1996 the band continued gaining high placings in Grade 4 until the 2002 National Championships in Napier where Taupo won practically every trophy on offer. Promotion to Grade 3 will mean tougher competition for the band.
