Montana Highlanders Pipe Band
The Montana Highlanders Pipe Band represents a little piece of Scotland right here in the Flathead Valley, northwest Montana.
In 1998, a group of people with an interest in Scottish music were casting about to try and find a way to get a band started. A man with strong vision and boundless determination, Jay Johnson, an experienced piper himself, stepped forward. With the help of long time pipe band drummer, Andrew Harvey, a group of 6 people formed the original Montana Highlanders, bringing over 100 years of combined experience. The old timers, Jack Taylor, Jim Moyer and Jay Johnson himself, are no longer with us, but their talent and dedication to quality performing got us started solidly down the road to success. Our group of pipers goes to the Games in the Northwest and has never failed to bring home medals for their playing. The band is preparing to compete as a group in the not-too-distant future. Many of the band members also attend piping camps and our favorites are the Coeur d'Alene Piping School and the Piping Hot Summer Drummer put on by Simon Frasier University. Chris Roskam, our newest piper will be competing in as many as 8 different games this year, along with Scott, his drummer-father. Our former pipe major, Josh Spencer, is competing with his college band in North Carolina and also entering solo competition. We meet every Monday night from 6:00 to 8:30 at the Faith Free Lutheran Church on the corner of Northern Lights Blvd and Liberty Street in Kalispell. We welcome any visiting band members or interested musicians to come watch or to participate in our weekly practices. Please enjoy our march toward more of the Celtic heritage we want to learn about and practice. We hope you'll stop by again!
