Litchfield Hills Pipe Band

The Litchfield Hills Pipes Band was formed in 1976 as a means to promote Scottish culture and music in Connecticut's Litchfield County. The band is outfitted in traditional highland civilian dress with kilts of the MacLaine of Lochbuie tartan.
The Litchfield Hills Pipe Band was founded in April of 1976 by Pipe Major John Galt. John was formerly an instructor with the Black Watch Highland Regiment in Canada, Pipe Major of the Upper Guernseytown Pipe Band in Watertown, CT and the founder of the Pyramid Temple Pipe Band in Milford, CT. In just over a year, John had trained a group of over a dozen pipers and drummers for their first performance at the 1977 Memorial Day Parade in Naugatuck, CT. The band was outfitted in military style uniforms with kilts of the Ancient Campbell of Argyll tartan. The band went on to play at many parades, local concerts and the first ever Burn's Night organized by the St. Andrew's Society of Connecticut. In 1984, Pipe Major John Fargason took the helm of this then little band and increased its exposure within the state and beyond. During this period the St. Andrews Society of CT started its first October Highland Festival featuring Litchfield Hills as the host band. In 1987, PM Fargason left the cold and snow of Litchfield county for the warmth of Texas. He was succeeded by Philip Rockefeller, who guided the band from 1987 to 1996. The band's popularity continued to increase. Under Pipe Major Rockefeller, the band was featured at the Eastern States Exposition and the Music Mountain Concert Series. During this period, the band changed from its military uniform to a civilian dress with the bright red kilts of the MacLean of Lochbuie tartan. The Litchfield Hills Pipe Band is currently under the direction of Pipe Major Sue Bannay and Drum Sergeant Emery Roth. Sue studied piping with Pipe Major Ronnie McShannon at the Bagpipe Institute, University of Stirling in Scotland.
