Steve, whose Scottish history stems from a cousin once being scared by a bagpipe, had been noticing the media interest in the 21st century style of kilt for some time. He had always wanted to wear a kilt but without a formal clan affiliation thought it improper to wear a tartan. The new style of kilt in solid colors and camouflage, with pockets, seemed perfect for everyday street wear. One summer Steve spent some time examining the various modern kilts available through the internet and in various shops in the Pacific Northwest, and decided to apply his engineering background to the development of a quality kilt for a reasonable price. While his wife was away for a week, he camped out in the sewing room with material, scissors, pins, brown paper, and a sewing machine, and created his first kilt. He wore this kilt to work the following week and the response was so enthusiastic he sold three that first day. Freedom Kilts was born.
