|Pipe and drum band composed of police and fire personnel, representing the greater Virginia Peninsula area. Est. 2003|
Ed Wilkinson and myself were standing on a street corner, on a humid June night, after clearing a man with a gun call. That is when the idea of a pipe and drum corps first came to life. From that late night in June, The Newport News Police Pipe and Drum Corps was born and our mission was established. Our motto is To Honor the Fallen. When our brothers and sisters fall in the line of duty or retired, we will aid the family and bring what comfort we can. Our second mission would be to promote positive public sentiment towards law enforcement and emergency services. To develop an atmosphere in which the police, emergency services and the community work together to better the community and to encourage active participation in community activities. To develop that spirit of teamwork and fellowship our organization not only consists of Newport News police officers, but members of their families, civilian police employees, retired officers, police officers from other jurisdictions, firefighters and civilians who are patriots of their community and country.
This organization will celebrate the Irish, Scottish and Welsh influence that our forefathers had in the formation of early police and fire departments. We will also celebrate the contributions made by those men and women who left country and home looking for a better life for their families and in the process helped forge a great nation. So I say let the bagpipers play and the drums roll. Tradition, heritage, honor, rememberrance, awareness and participation will be our dream. It will take a lot of work, practice, patience and fund raising to reach our dream but in this great nation we can dream dreams just like our forefathers did. I would like to thank those organiztions and individuals who have helped us to move forward.
