Our Band was originally formed in 1948 as a girls band, and at the time, it was under the direction of Pipe Major Ted Elder and Drum Sergeant Sam Baxter. The Red Deer Legion Branch 35 took over sponsorship of the band in 1970. In addition to participating in street parades, cultural and recreational events in and around Central Alberta, the Red Deer Legion Pipe Band has also been active on the competition circuit since 1983.
Competitions have taken the band all around Alberta as well as British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Hawaii and Scotland. The Band made it's second trip to Scotland in 2004 to participate in both competitive and non-competitive events. The first trip to Scotland was in 1992.
Presently the band is under the Direction of Pipe Major, Frank Neelands, Pipe Sergeants, Bruce Miller and Stuart Somerville, Drum Major, Mike MacDonald and Drum Sergeant Chad Wilmot. In total, the band is comprised of 15 pipers, 3 tenor drummers, 6 snare drummers, 2 bass drummers and a single Drum Major.
Interest in piping and drumming is presently strong as evident by the number of individuals of all ages currently receiving instruction weekly by members of the Pipe Band. This will help to ensure a solid membership in years to come.
A special thank you must go to the Red Deer Legion Branch 35 for their continued support and enthusiasm without which the band would not be where it is today. Thanks also goes to all those individuals and non profit societies that have helped the band and the Scottish community in the past years and in years to come.
