Song of the Sea began in Michigan as Great Lakes Dulcimers in 1974, when Edward Damm taught himself to build hammered and mountain dulcimers. Edward and Anne Damm moved to Bar Harbor in 1979 and continued to build over 900 dulcimers, bowed psalteries, Finnish kanteles, and kinder harps. The goal of Song of the Sea is to spread the joy of music and enable folks to add music to their lives, whether by playing an instrument, building a kit, or listening to a recording. We are here to answer your questions, demonstrate instruments - by telephone or in person, find instructional materials and support to learn how to play at home. Please listen to the sound samples on our pages to hear what the instruments sound like.
