Hi, I am new to piping, and have been playing the practice chanter for about 6 months. I am considering getting a set of practice pipes next month. Now I just came across a page where everyone was saying not to get practice pipes because they will slow down the transition and learning of GHB. I don't really plan to ever go all the way to GHB but rather to small pipes due to how loud they are, and the fact that if I play openly it will be with a band and vocals not solo. Would getting a set of practice pipes be good in this scenario since I really can't afford to get a full set of good small pipes right now?

The pipes I am looking at are the Bagpipes Galore Practice Pipes.

Also if anyone has played these please let me know how they are.

Thank You

Hello and welcome to the Bagpiper.Com Forums.

I would not get practice pipes either, I would save up and get a really great set of small pipes. Practice pipes are great if you need an inexpensive set of pipes to take on the road with you. Its a step up from the chanter but not much. A set of small pipes is a much wiser investment. You can always get small pipes in different keys and made from different materials.

Learn on the chanter, make sure you can play several tunes well and then make the investment into a nice set of wooden small pipes, fireside pipes, bellows blown pipes or even electronic pipes/highland hornpipe.

Thanks,

Kevin
