Hi all - There is much, much, much talk about the use of the practice chanter in preparation for an eventual move to the pipes. It has all been very useful, and led to significant impovement over time.

But, I am haveing a duece of a time finding any info on the proper introdution to using the bag.

I have been on my PC for about 2 years now, am good with the scale, and making progress with graces and embellishments. I have 4-5 tunes down pretty well.

I recently aquired a set of kitchen pipes and MAN!, what a new challenge!; trying to wrestle with the bag and getting decent breath/squeeze control.... forget it!

So, bottom line: any hints tricks, suggestions, etc. on ways to approach this next step in my development?

Thanks,

LEE

WEll, Lee now you can see why they say its not so easy:) while tradition dictates your at about the right period of time, MANY new world instructor havebeen getting you up a tad faster these days...starting to learn the process while yourlearning the chanter aspects.. THe GHB this would mean plugging the chanter hole with a stopper for instance to get you feeling the drones, steady blowing and building up our diaphram... and it would also mean stoppering off each drone ( making a "goose" n the beginning) so you could also break in a reed and begin to see what tone sounds like on the chanter reed ... eventually leaving the drones inthe stocks and corking the tops off(to be sure you've no leaks as well as learning to control the feel of the octpus on your shoulder trying to jump around on ya... Because your term for kitchen pipes might vary from My thinking if you plan on playin the GHB they will be stiffer then smallpipes we used to refer to the amount of "lumber" you would force to move although with modern plastics they can also be synthetic .... Each step is important we each have issues and humps to get over the most important thing to remember in any of the steps I have mentioned is when your playing chanter blowing tone on the drones or playing totally is you always "Blow your arm Off the bag" gentle pressure on the arm and gentle pressure Into the bag , forcing your arm to rise, not lifting it off... "playing" in any manner with everything out of tune is terrible you will begin to want to tune drones... if only to themselves ... with time that will come too...

Chanter > goose> drones> GHP is a realistic progresssion
chanter >kitchen/smallpipes> to ghp is also realistic but IN between to gain control use your corks and learn to control each aspect (drones and chanter) to gain groundand move >>>> Jim feel free to ask...
