This set of R.G. Hardie H2 Highland bagpipes sounds amazing. They are fully combed and beaded with imitation ivory projection mounts and ringcaps, nickel ferrules, and are made from African blackwood. The imitation ivory projection mounts have aged well into a nice cream/yellow color. As any instrument does with age, these pipes have really come into their sound. The drones give a nice, steady, warm deep sound. I have wygent synthetic drone reeds in them, which sound great. They go for about $75. Read more about R.G. The chanter is a David Naill African blackwood chanter. In my opinion, this is the best pipe chanter you can have. The leading soloist pipers of the world use these regularly. I have 6 hand selected Warnock chanter reeds, these are best cane reeds on the market in my opinion. These cost me about $85 all together. Read more about them here: http://www.warnockreeds.com/products.aspx
I also have 4 Clanrye synthetic chanter reeds. These actually sound pretty good, and you never really have to mess with them. They will stay in tune for many months if not longer. 2 are hard, and 2 are medium. These are great for beginners, as they are easier to blow. They go for $55 a piece. I have an airstream blowpipe, which make a huge difference. You can get a lot more air into your pipes, and the mouthpiece is more comfortable. I use a soft case bag from the British shop. See a pic here: http://www.britishshop.com/item.php?item_id=1162 These bags are great, I hauled my pipes all around the world, and they were kept very safe in this case. Mine looks a little different, this must be a newer model, but still the same thing essentially. It has straps as well, making it easy to strap to your back like a backpack.
I have a nice black silk cord, and black velvet bag cover, these pipes look slick. As you can see, I’ve put a lot of money and care into these pipes.
I bought them in 1999, but they are really like new, I have taken very good care of them. I have found one or two dings in one of the tenor drones, but other than that there is not a scratch. Absolutely no cracks found, I made a careful inspection. These pipes have a bit of a story as well, and because of this, I’ve been a little reluctant to give them up. I traveled all across Europe for long stretches of time, playing these pipes on the street to make my way. I also played them in Times Square in NYC when I first moved there. Despite being lugged across the world with me, they have remained in remarkable shape. I want these pipes to go to a good home!
